Spell MOM

Good Morning! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Spring started this past Sunday (even though we had snow!). Here are to warmer days!

The written word has always been a world I could escape to for as long as I could remember. From the moment I learned how to read, I was always lost in a book. There is something about the way words fit together to tell a story that amazes me. Have you ever wondered where a word came from? Or have you ever seen a street name and think ,”Why is it called that?”. Yup, that’s me.

Long before I ever wanted kids I always knew my children would be immersed in language. I wanted them to love language as much as myself. From the day both of my boys were born, words were so important. I read them books from the moment we came home from the hospital. I talked to them nonstop throughout the day. I remember when I was pumping with my oldest, he would sit in his bouncy chair and I would teach him a word of the day. My little guy hears my big guy and I conversing all the time that those words are present in his life all of the time.

Many of you will remember the “City of Windows” story I told you about my oldest last year. I hope that my love of words will spread to them and they will enjoy it as much as I do.

Just the other day my two boys and I were sitting in my big guy’s room playing. We were practicing letter sounds with the magnet letters on his dry erase easel. He would tell me the sound of the letter and then we would try to find something in his room that began with that letter. After a few minutes both boys were playing by themselves. I was watching them and noticed my big guy staring at the letters on the easel. He looked at me and said “Mommy, here are two M’s. If I put this O in the middle, it spells MOM”. I sat there with my mouth open and then it gradually turned to a smile. I gave him a huge hug and told him that I was so proud of him that he spelled his first word on his own. I guess you would say MOM is the word.

Out of all the words in the world, his first word that he spelled on his own was MOM. Talk about a suspended moment in time. Daddy takes the cake for being my son’s first word that he ever spoke. I loved hearing him say DADA too. However, I get the first word he ever spelled. He is definitely on his way. His journey to learn words has just begun. I can’t wait to see how it goes!

What are some great first word stories that were either spoken or spelled by your little ones? Comment below!
